This book is not a mere compilation of the three major statutes governing the criminal law in India.   It contains guidelines for the reader to divert into different avenues of the topic.   During the initial years of the Indian Republic, criminal law of this country could have been exhausted substantially by the study of the three Major Acts, but during the course of time, a number of legislative enactments added to them rendered the subject vastly expansive.

In spite of the spate of such minor Acts, the basic features of criminal law in India remained with in the frontiers of the three major Acts – Penal Code, procedure Code and Evidence Act.  It is heartening that the core of criminal law remained unchanged, despite the cosmetic modifications brought out in the three Major Acts, thanks to the pragmatic interpretations made by various High Courts and Supreme Court of India, from time to time..

Sri. Clarance Miranda, the author of this book is a practicing lawyer.   He would have realized that the book now in currency as Major Acts published by many publishers do not really reflect the criminal law as established in the Kerala scenario, because of the exclusive thrust given to the bare provisions of the enactments.    I have observed from a browsing through the pages of this book that it contains many tidbits for the legal practitioner as well as the judicial functionary to get a useful aid for dealing with the litigations reaching them.

No doubt, this is not an exhaustive commentary and the author did not intend to bring out such a treatise now.    However, I entertain a feeling that this venture undertaken by the author would provide him with the necessary pabulum to embark up on an exhaustive and modern commentary on criminal law into which all the important minor acts would also be given admission, besides the three major Acts.

I wish Sri Clarance Miranda all success in his venture.    May this be a prelude to a monumental work yet to be published.

Thanking You,

Mr. Justice K. T. Thomas,
Former Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
